May Library Events

Tiny Tots Time – Tuesday, May 5 at 10 a.m.
Babies and their caregivers are invited to the library for an hour of activities that focus on language enrichment and preliteracy skills. For ages 0-2. After May 5, Tiny Tots will be taking a break. Summer activities for babies begin June 16.

Preschool Story Time – Friday, May 8 at 10 a.m.
Preschoolers and their caregivers participate in an hour of stories, songs and other activities. For ages 2-5. This is the last session of preschool story time until summer. Preschool Story Time resumes on June 19.

Barns of Walworth County – Tuesday, May 5 at 7 p.m.
Frank Landi will explore the architectural history of barns and will focus on the barns of Walworth County. He will also discuss the art of silos, windmills and farm machinery.

Exercise for Your Health - Thursday, May 7 at 7 p.m.
Dr. Brock Belcher discusses the benefits of various types of exercise and helps you decide what exercise is best for you. Topics include why the body craves exercise, how to fit exercise into a busy life, and ergonomics.

Soapmaking – Saturday, May 9 at 1 p.m.
Make a wonderful gift for Mothers Day . . . or any day! For ages 5 and up. Children must be accompanied by caregivers. REGISTRATION REQUIRED.

Your Finances in a Changing Economy –
Tuesday, May 12 at 6:30 p.m.
Dana Esser, Associate Financial Advisor with Ameriprise Financial Services, discusses handling your investments in today’s economy. A question and answer period follows her presentation.

Book Discussion – Thursday, May 21 at 7 p.m.
This month’s title is The Story of Edgar Sawtelle by David Wroblewski. Born without the ability to speak, Edgar Sawtelle grows up on a Wisconsin farm where his parents breed and train dogs. Shortly after the arrival of his uncle, Edgar’s father dies unexpectedly. When Edgar tries to prove his father was murdered, his plan backfires and he flees into the wilderness with three young dogs who follow him. Anyone who has read the book is welcome to attend.

Library Lock-In: Teen Movie Night – Friday, May 29 at 6:30 p.m.
Tonight’s film is for teens in grade 6 and up. We’ll be showing Twilight (Rated PG-13, 122 minutes). Isabella Swan's move to Forks, a perpetually rainy town in Washington, could have been the most boring move she ever made. When she meets the mysterious, alluring Edward Cullen--a vampire--her life takes a thrilling and terrifying romantic turn. This event takes place after the library closes. Doors will be open from 6:15 to 7 p.m. Refreshments will be served.

Children’s Book Week May 11-17
One hallmark of Children's Book Week is the only national child-selected book awards program: the Children's Choice Book Awards. The awards celebrate books, authors, and illustrators that capture the interest and imaginations of kids and teens. Celebrate the life and work of the man who brought you The Cat in the Hat. Everyone is invited to enjoy games, a craft, and -- of course -- birthday cake!

Media Swap - Monday, March 16 at 6 p.m.

Teens are invited to trade their gently used books, magazines, CD's, movies, and games. Receive credit for the items you bring in, then trade your credit for stuff from other teens. For grade 6 and up.

Book Discussion - Thursday, March 19 at 7 p.m.

This month's title is The Commoner by John Burnham Schwartz, a novel based on the life of Empress Michiko of Japan. Books and discussion guides are available at the library. Anyone who has read the book is welcome to attend.

Knitting 101- Mondays from 6-8 p.m.
January 12 to February 2
Learn the basics of knitting and make your first project in this free class. All materials will be provided. Experienced knitters are welcome to bring their projects and join us or pair up with a beginning student and become a volunteer knitting tutor! Class size is limited to 15 beginners. Call the library to register (728-3111).

Aram Book Discussion - Thursday, January 15 at 7 p.m.
Our selection this month is On Chesil Beach by Ian McEwan. The story captures one night and two lifetimes, as newlyweds Florence and Edward navigate their wedding night, coping with their greatest fears and wishes. Books and discussion guides are available at the library. Anyone who has read the book is welcome to attend.

Library Lock-In: Family Movie Night
Friday, January 16 from 6:30-8:00 p.m.
Friday after the library closes, we'll be showing Disney's "Wall-E," the story of an abandoned waste management robot who finds true love and a new purpose in life. (Rated G, 98 minutes.) Library doors will open to moviegoers at 6:15 and no one will be admitted after 7:15 p.m.

Anime Night - Thursday, January 22 at 6 p.m.

For teens age 12-18.
Enjoy some Pocky and other snacks while joining your friends for this special showing of "Ghost Hunt." Ghost Hunt follows the adventures of Mai Taniyama, a first year high school student. After grudgingly agreeing to assist a prodigy ghost hunter, Mai discovers that things really do go bump in the night.

COME TO A BIRTHDAY PARTY!
SATURDAY, MARCH 15 AT 1 P.M.

Sam I am, fox in socks, the cat in the hat, and the grinch are just a few of the characters populating some of my favorite children's books, all written by Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss.

Dr. Seuss was born on March 2, 1904. Every year in March, millions of fans celebrate the life and work of this author and illustrator, and this year, we are celebrating too! On Saturday, March 15, Aram Public Library invites you to attend a birthday party for Dr. Seuss. A typical birthday party includes games and cake, but Dr. Seuss had a pretty wild imagination, and I think his birthday party deserves to be a little different.

If Dr. Seuss were to plan a birthday party, what do you think it would be like? Would the cake be miles high with purple and green frosting? Would balancing fish bowls on your umbrella take the place of "pin the tail on the donkey?" Will everyone wear 500 party hats while the Birthday Honk Honker blows his horn?

You never know what will happen when you let your imagination take over. Turn YOUR imagination loose on March 15 at Dr. Seuss's Birthday Party. See you at 1 p.m. here at Aram Public Library!

It's a Game Show Live @ APL!

Almost all of us have enjoyed a game show on TV at one time or another. As a child, I was amazed by my mother's knowledge when we watched "The Price is Right." Some people prefer word games like "Wheel of Fortune," while others' heads are full of otherwise useless facts that give them an edge in "Jeopardy."

I've been diagnosed by my kids as having a parent-specific form of senility, a short-term memory loss that prevents me from understanding anything that "they" know. According to the under 18 generation, there's a lot more to know now than when I was a kid, and only kids can (and do, according to them) know it all.

Find out who's got the brains in your family when Aram Public Library presents ARE YOU SMARTER THAN A 5TH GRADER? on Saturday, February 16 at 1 p.m. Teams of parents will compete against teams of children, answering questions ranging in difficulty from 1st through 5th grade level on a variety of school subjects.

We challenge YOUR family to join our kids-against-parents battle of the brains!

Lunch and a Movie

SATURDAY, JANUARY 19 @ 12 NOON
RATED PG (85 MINUTES)

The penguins are coming, and so is the pizza! Chow down and laugh it up at Aram Public Library on Saturday, January 19 when we offer "Lunch and a Movie." Beginning at noon, you can enjoy pizza and a beverage while watching the animated feature "Surf's Up," the story of teenage Cody Maverick, a penguin determined to win the Penguin World Surfing Championship. I never knew that surfing was invented by penguins. . .

This family program is free of charge and open to the public. Food and beverage will be provided. "Surf's Up" is Rated PG for some mild language and crude humor. More information for parents is available from The Movie Mom or the IMDb Parents Guide.
