April 2015 Library Events

1000 Books Before Kindergarten

This program aims to ensure that all children entering kindergarten have acquired necessary learning and literacy skills through exposure to books and a language-rich early childhood experience.  This program is open-ended so you can read at your own pace, year-round!  Stop by the Children's Desk for more information or to sign up!

Hans Christian Andersen Party - Thursday, April 2 at 1 p.m.

April 2 is Hans Christian Andersen's birthday.  To celebrate, we're throwing a party!  We'll provide the fairy tales, activities, and food.  All we need is you!  Do you have a favorite Hans Christian Andersen story?  Why not dress up as your favorite character?

LEGO Club - Monday, April 6 and 20 at 4:30 p.m.

Give our LEGO blocks a workout building anything from a dinosaur to a spaceship.  Work in teams or individually, give your creation a name, then see it displayed in the Children's Library.

Adult Craft Night - Monday, April 6 from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

It's NOT JUST A KEY CHAIN!  Join us at our next adult craft night when we make this easy key chain out of washers, a wine cork, and a few embellishments.  Go a step further, and you can turn this key chain into a totally different craft . . . add a piece of ribbon, cord, or leather, and the key chain can be used to decorate a vase or bottle!  Be sure to check out the sample at the adult services desk. All materials will be provided. Space is limited so registration is required.

Story Time with Ms. Denise - Wednesdays at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Spring into action and head on over to the library for Story Time with Ms. Denise!  The morning session is for babies and toddlers, afternoon is for all ages, and both follow these fun themes: 
                       April 1 - It's Egg Time!
                       April 8 - Cities
                       April 15 - Hats and Hair
                       April 22 - It's Earth Day!
                       April 29 - Moustaches

Tech Tutorials - Wednesdays from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m.

Baffled by technology?  Sign up for a 45-minute one-on-one session with a librarian for assistance with anything computer related, such as downloading ebooks and audiobooks, filling out online applications, signing up or managing email, or learning to use Microsoft Office software.  Bring your own device or use one of the library's computers.  Registration is required.

Knit and Crochet Club - April 6, 13, 22, and 29 at 6 p.m.

Knit and Crochet Club meets at 6 p.m. on the first two Mondays and the last two Wednesdays of every month.  all ages and experience levels are welcome!  Bring your own project to work on, share your expertise, and learn from others.

Tail Waggin' Tutors with Divot - Saturday, April 4 at 10 a.m.

Yes, dog lovers . . . Divot is coming back to hear more stories!  make an appointment to read with him the first Saturday of each month.  Stop by the Children's Desk or call 262-728-3111, ext. 117, to reserve your time slot!  Registration is required.

National Library Week - April 12 to 18

Celebrate National Library Week at your favorite library!  As a token of appreciation for all out wonderful patrons, from Sunday, April 12 through Saturday, April 18, all items may be returned without accumulating overdue fines.  Also, earn fine forgiveness coupons for participating in our daily library trivia question!  (Limit one coupon per person per day.)

Gingerbread Libraries - Monday, April 13 and Wednesday, April 15 at 5 p.m.

Here's another fun way to celebrate National Library Week. Create your own edible library-centric masterpiece from cookies and other yummy materials we provide.  Registration is required.

April Showers - Tuesday, April 14 at 4 p.m.

"Drip, drip, drop little April showers . . ."  Join Ms. Katherine in a rainy day celebration!  We'll read books, do crafts, and have snacks . . . all celebrating spring weather in its unpredictable glory.  Rain or shine, we'll have a good time!

Composting 101 - Tuesday, April 14 at 6 p.m.

Get a jumpstart on improving your soil this gardening season as Deanna Stirmel teaches us the basics of composting.  Registration is required.

NEW TIME!  Baby to Three, Come Wiggle with Me! - Monday, April 13 and 27 at 10 a.m.

You put your left foot in, you put your left foot out  . . . that's what Ms. Katherine's all about!  Words and wiggles go together like peanut butter and jelly in this special story time/open play/dance party for babies, toddlers, and their grown-ups.  Read, wiggle, repeat!

Library Board Meeting - Thursday, April 16 at 4:30 p.m.


Aram Book Club - Thursday, April 16 at 6:30 p.m.

Out of the depths of the Depression comes an irresistible story about beating the odds and finding hope in the most desperate of times -- the improbable, intimate account of how nine working-class boys from the american West showed the world at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin what true grit really meant.  Join us in discussing The Boys in the Boat  by Daniel James Brown.  Please contact the library if you would like a copy of the book reserved for you.

Cooking for One or Two - Tuesday, April 21 at 2 p.m.

Tired of the same old evening meal?  Looking for practical meals that do not feed a family of four?  Join Walworth County UW-Extension Family Living Educator Jenny Wehmeier for helpful hints and tops when cooking for a family of one or two.  We will taste some recipes that can be created for low cost and less mess.  Bring your questions and be prepared to elave with new ideas and recipes! Registration is required to ensure samples for all.

Tween/Teen Sharpie Art - Thursday, April 23 at 6 p.m.

OK, let's be real . . . who doesn't love doodling with Sharpies?  They're fun, they're colorful, and they're permanent, which means anything is game: shoes, mugs . . . whatever!  We'll provide all the Sharpies and an assortment of things to decorate; you provide the creativity!  Have something special you've wanted to spruce up?  Bring it along!  Sharpies, FTW!

Guilty Pleasures Book Club - Monday, April 27 at 6 p.m.

A celebrated photojournalist, Alex Graham has recorded some of the most tragic and heartbreaking of stories, but her latest assignment has forced her across a dangerous line.  At a dam collapse in Arapahoe Junction, Colorado, Alex witnesses a conspiracy that will shock the nation.  What happens when a reporter does more than just report?  Find out in this month's selection, Dead Aim by Iris Johanssen.  Books are available at the library and anyone who has read the book is welcome to join the discussion.
