March 2011 Library Events

LEGO Club – 1ST and 3RD Mondays: March 7 and 21 at 4 p.m. Attention LEGO Lovers: Come to the library with your friends on the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month. At each meeting, we’ll give you a theme to build from, time to build individually or together, and a chance to share and display creations. Final projects will be displayed in the Youth Services Department.

Dr. Seuss Birthday Bash – Wednesday, March 2 at 4 p.m.
It’s a birthday party for one of our favorite authors! Come celebrate the birthday of Dr. Seuss with games, crafts, food and fun. Children under 12 must be accompanied by a caregiver.

Young Artist Reception – Thursday, March 3 from 5:30-7 p.m.
In recognition of Youth Art Month the Aram Public Library will again be hosting a display of art created by talented students from our elementary and middle schools. Artwork will be on display throughout the month, but you can meet the artists in person at the Young Artist Reception on March 3. Refreshments will be served from 5:30-7 p.m.

Secret Society of Superheroes – Thursday, March 24 at 11 a.m.
Calling all Superheroes! We have learned that a dastardly super villain is planning to attack the library on March 24. Come in disguise, complete your secret mission, and save us from the forces of evil.

Pizza and a Movie – Friday, March 25 - at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
Sign up in person or by phone beginning Thursday, March 24.
Despicable Me (Rated PG for rude humor and mild action; 95 minutes)
Gru delights in all things wicked. Surrounded by an army of tireless little yellow minions, and armed with his arsenal of shrink rays, freeze rays, and battle-ready vehicles for land and air, he vanquishes all who stand in his way. Until the day he encounters the immense will of three little orphaned girls who look at him and see something that no one else has ever seen, a potential dad.

Hey, Cupcake – Wednesday, March 23 at 3 p.m.
A cupcake-decorating extravaganza for all ages. Express your creativity with delicious results! All materials are provided. Children under 12 must be accompanied by a caregiver.

Bookmark Design Contest
Summer will be here before you know it, and with it our Summer Library Program. This year we’re having a design contest to come up with a series of bookmarks related to this year’s summer themes: One World, Many Stories, You Are Here, and Novel Destinations. There will be five entry levels with a prize for the winner of each group, and winning bookmarks will be used for the Summer Library Program! Complete details are available at the library.

Giant Monopoly – Tuesday, March 22 at 1 p.m.
You are the game piece in this life-size game of Monopoly. Roll the monster dice and giant-step yourself around the game board. You could become a property baron, owe back taxes, or even end up in jail! This program is recommended for experienced Monopoly players. Regular Monopoly rules apply.

Teen Tech Week QR Treasure Hunt – March 7 to March 19
Celebrate Teen Tech Week by participating in our QR treasure hunt and you might win an iPod Touch. Open to teens in grade 6 and older, this program gives you a chance to try out the QR reader app on your smart phone, or borrow our iPod touch with QR reader. A variety of clues will be set up in the teen area of the library, and treasure hunters will be led clue-by-clue to places and things in the library or on the internet, including videos made by teen authors. Complete the challenge and enter to win an iPod Touch.

All You Can Read Buffet – Thursdays, March 10 and 24 at 3:30 p.m.
The All You Can Read Buffet is a book club by teens for teens. The March 10 meeting will be held at the library and we’ll be talking about Paranoid Park by Blake Nelson. This book tells about a sixteen-year-old Portland, Oregon, skateboarder whose parents are going through a difficult divorce. He’s engulfed by guilt and confusion when he accidentally kills a security guard at a train yard. Then, on March 24, we’ll meet at Starbucks to talk about Gentlemen by Michael Northrup. In this book, three teenaged boys suspect that their English teacher is responsible for their friend's disappearance. They must navigate a maze of assorted clues, fraying friendships, violence, and Dostoevsky's "Crime and punishment" before learning the truth. Books are available at the library. Friends Book Sale – Saturday, March 12 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Preview for Friends members only Friday, March 11 from 2 to 4 p.m.
The Friends of APL Spring Fling book sale will take place on Saturday, March 12. A variety of books, videos, audio books and other materials will be offered for sale. Want to attend the Friday night preview? Friends memberships are available at the door for $5.

Library Board Meeting – Thursday, March 3 at 4 p.m.

Books and Bagels – Saturday, March 5 at 10 a.m.
This informal drop-in program gives you a chance to share a light breakfast and talk about what you’re reading with other book lovers. Hosted by a different library staff member each month, Books and Bagels exposes you to a lot of different titles and authors. Beginning in March, we’ll include a themed book display at each meeting. Refreshments provided. Adults only please.

Reel Women Film Series– Mondays at 11 a.m.
Celebrate Women’s History Month by attending our brown bag film series “Reel Women.” Bring your lunch and these movies focusing on extraordinary women. Juice and bottled water will be provided. Coffee, tea and hot chocolate are available from the Friends Beverage Kiosk at the library’s main desk.

Book Discussion - Thursday, February 17 at 7 p.m.
Crazy for the Storm by Norman Ollestad
Set in Malibu and Mexico in the late 1970s, the book captures the earthy surf culture of Southern California, the boy's conflicted feelings for his magnetic father, and the exhilarating tests of skill in the surf and snow that prepared young Norman to become a fearless surfer and ski champion--which ultimately saved his life.

Animé for Adults – Saturday, March 26 at 10 a.m.
Shigofumi: Letters from the Departed (Not Rated)
Are some secrets best kept with the dead? For most Shigofumi Mail Carriers, charged with delivering messages from the recently departed to those left behind, the question is purely rhetorical as most Carriers are dead themselves and past the point of caring about the still breathing. The solemn girl known as Fumika, however, is all too aware of the mortal perspective, for she is still aging: an indicator that she is somehow, mysteriously, still alive.

Computer Class: Basic Word Processing – Tuesday, March 15 from 4 to 6 p.m.     Please pre-register.
Learn to create, edit and format a word processing document using OpenOffice. OpenOffice is an on-line free office suite that is similar to and compatible with Microsoft Office. The word processing skills you learn here will apply to any word processing software you encounter in the home, workplace, school or library.

English Conversation Group – Wednesdays at 1 p.m.
For students learning English as a second language, this drop-in group gives you a chance to practice everyday conversation skills. Everyone is welcome.

Tiny Tots Time – Tuesdays at 10 a.m.
Babies in the library – that’s what Tiny Tots is all about! Tiny Tots Time, designed for children ages 0-2, is a program that brings caregivers and babies together for an hour of stimulating experiences intended to nurture the bond between caregiver and child. The program includes nursery rhymes and songs, book sharing, parenting information, and free play.

Preschool Story Time – Fridays at 10 a.m.
Help your preschooler get ready to read. Share books, stories, rhymes, music, and movement with your children and build language skills. Preschool children and their parents or caregivers are invited to join us for story time on Fridays at 10 a.m. Activities are age-appropriate for children from age 3 through Kindergarten, and each program includes a variety of activities. The program is free and registration is not required, but caregivers are expected to stay with children. There will be NO STORY TIME on March 11 and 18.

Tax Forms – The library currently has a small supply of some tax forms, including the 1040 series Federal forms. Tax forms, instructions and publications are also available on line.

Classic Film Series – Tuesday, February 1 at 6:30 p.m.
Title to be announced. Warm your heart and get into a Valentine mood with this classic romantic comedy and a classy dessert.

Library Board Meeting – Thursday, February 3 at 4 p.m.

Books ‘n’ Bagels – Saturday, February 5 at 10 a.m.
This informal drop-in program gives you a chance to compare notes with other book lovers. Share your favorite (or least favorite) titles and authors and help us compile our “Best and Worst Books of 2010” list. Refreshments provided. Adults only please.

Teen Masquerade Ball – Saturday, February 12 at 6 p.m.
Don your finest masquerade outfit and prepare for a night of mystery and music. Teens 13 and older come and dance the night away.

UFO (Unfinished Objects) Club – Monday, Feb. 14 at 6:30 p.m. & Thursday, Feb. 24 at 2 p.m.  A drop-in workshop for crafters and needleworkers. Bring a project to work on. Scrapbookers are welcome to use our die cut machine provided you bring your own dies.

Book Discussion - Thursday, February 17 at 7 p.m.
Freedom by Jonathan Franzen
The idyllic lives of civic-minded environmentalists Patty and Walter Berglund come into question when their son moves in with aggressive Republican neighbors, green lawyer Walter takes a job in the coal industry, and go-getter Patty becomes increasingly unstable and enraged. Books and discussion guides are available at the library.

Tax Forms – The library currently has the following Wisconsin tax forms and instructions in stock:  Form 1, 1A, WI-Z, 1NPR, Schedule WD, Homestead (H and H-EZ), and Rent Certificate. We also have instructions for the 1040EZ, but shipping of Federal forms has been delayed and we do not expect them to arrive until early in February.
