June 2015 Library Events

LEGO Club - Monday, June 1 at 4:30 p.m. AND Monday, June 15, 22 and 29 from 1 to 3 p.m.

Give our LEGO blocks a workout building anything from a dinosaur to a spaceship. Work in teams or individually, give your creation a name, then see it displayed in the Children's Library.

Adult Craft Night: The Basics on Beaded  Bracelets - Monday, June 1 at 6 p.m.

Summer is almost here, and it's time to brighten up your jewelry with summer-colored glass bead bracelets!  We will cover the basics like sizing the elastic cord, tying slip-free knots, and hiding those knots with charms.  Then you will have time to create your own summer bracelet.  All materials will be supplied and directions will be available for you to take home.  Be sure to check out the sample on display at the adult services desk.  Registration is required.

Knit and Crochet Club - Monday, June 1 and 8 and Wednesday, June 17 and 24 at 6 p.m.

For all ages and experience levels, Knit and Crochet Club meets at 6 p.m. on the scheduled dates. Bring your own project to work on, share your expertise, and learn from others.

Tech Tutorials - Wednesdays from 9:30 to 11 a.m. - Registration Required

Baffled by technology?  Sign up for a 45-minute one-on-one session with a librarian for assistance with anything computer related, such as downloading ebooks and audiobooks, filling our online applications, signing up or managing email, or learning to use Microsoft Office software.  Bring in your own device or use one of the library's computers.

Plant Care and New Varieties for 2015 - Thursday, June 4 at 1:30 p.m.

Escape the Ordinary - Grow an outstanding garden! The Friends of Aram Public Library have invited Chrissy Wen from UW Extension to teach us about caring for plants.  She will also highlight the new varieties available for this growing season.

Tail Waggin' Tutors with Divot - Saturday, June 6 at 10 a.m.  Registration Required.

Yes, dog lovers . . . Divot is coming back to hear more stories!  make an appointment to spend time reading with him the first Saturday of each month.  Stop by the Children's Desk or call 262-728-3111 Ext. 117 to reserve your time slot!

Spanish Classes - Saturday, June 6, 13, and 27 at 9 a.m.  Registration Required.

Learn basic Spanish in this free 10-week course taught by Angel Anaya.  Course materials may be checked out from the library.  Spend an hour a week expanding your horizons!

Summer Reading Kick-off: 2 Days of Fun!  June 12-13


Superhero Training Camp (Aram Library with Delavan Parks & Recreation) - Friday, June 12 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Veteran's Park

Do you have what it takes to be a superhero?  Test your mettle and show us what you've got while conquering our Superjhero Training Camp at Veteran's Park.  We'll make masks, perform feats of derring-do, rock a photo booth, and have a blast!  Costumes are encouraged!

Community Heroes - Saturday, June 13 at 10 a.m.

Not all heroes wear capes and masks.  Join us at the library to celebrate our community's heroes.  We'll have a fire truck, a squad card . . . and more!

Baby to Three, Come Wiggle with Me - Monday, June 15, 22, and 29 at 10 a.m.

Words and wiggles go together like peanut butter and jelly in this special story time/dance party/open play extravaganza for babies and toddlers (and their grown-ups, of course.)  We'll provide stories, songs, and things to explore . . . all we need is you!  Read, wiggle, repeat!

Intro to Food Preservation - Tuesday, June 16 at 11 a.m.  Registration Required.

Escape the Ordinary - Eat nutritiously and economically all year long!   Do you remember the smells coming from your grandmother's kitchen during pickling, jam, or jelly time?  Are you struggling with where to start?  Join Master Food Preserver Jenny Wehmeier for an information session on pressure canning, water bath canning, freezing, and dehydrating.  This class is meant for the beginner, but all are welcome.  Participants will leave with many handouts and ideas of how to get started.

Curt Strutz: Hillbilly Silly Science - Tuesday, June 16 at 1:30 p.m.

Take a dash of science, a blob of humor, throw in some hillbillies for good measure, and what do you get?  You get the explosively good time of the Hillbilly Silly science Spectacular!  Some and witness the crazy antics of Dr. Cletus Beaker and his assistant, Professor Choo-Choo Peterson, as the two of them put a unique and comical twist on the world of science.  You'll laugh, you'll learn, and you'll have a rootin' tootin' good ol' time as you learn a brand new meaning to the phrase "weird science!"  The Storywagon series is presented by the Lakeshores Library System.

Storytime with Ms. Denise - Wednesday, June 17 and 24 at 10 a.m.

Summer time, and the reading is easy!  Join Ms. Denise at 10 a.m. every week for heroic stories, songs, and fun!  And remember, Every Hero has a Story!

Brick Bookends: Kids and Family Edition - Wednesday, June 17 at 1:30 p.m.                       Brick Bookends by (and for) Teens and Tweens - Thursday, June 18 at 1:30 p.m.

Looking for an inexpensive, stylish way to display your books, DVDs, or magazines?  Why not use a brick?  But not just any brick: a brick that you -- yes, you -- decorated yourself with magazine clippings, glitter, paint . . . anything you want!  You can even decorate one for us to use here at the library!  All materials will be provided.  Just bring your creativity!

Escape the Ordinary - find out what life was like in 1927!  This month's selection, One Summer: America 1927, examines the events and personalities and just plain weirdness of the summer of 1927.  Bill Bryson transports readers back in time with vividness, an eye for telling detail, and delicious humor.  Contact the library if you'd like a book and discussion guide held for you.  Anyone who has read the book is welcome to attend.

Father's Day Craft - Saturday, June 20 at 10 a.m.

Aren't dads great?  Let's celebrate them and wish them a Happy Father's Day with a fun dad-centric craft.  After all, who doesn't love a homemade gift?

Crafternoon - Monday, June 22 from 1 to 3 p.m.

Do you love to craft and create as much as we do?  Stop by the library and take full advantage of our ample craft supplies.  Create anything you like -- the sky's the limit!

Lou Lepore Comedy Magic - Tuesday, June 23 at 1:30 p.m.

Join Aram Public Library for a magical adventure with the amazing Lou Lepore!  He'll blend magic and mystery with a healthy sprinkling of comedy!  Prepare to be amazed -- and amused! The Storywagon series is presented by the Lakeshores Library System.

Fill 'er Up Documentary - Tuesday, June 23 at 6 p.m.

Escape the Ordinary - Relive the days before self-service!  Wisconsin Public Television's production of Fill 'er Up: The Glory Days of Wisconsin Gas Stations takes a look at vintage gas stations as icons of architecture, economics, and pop culture.

Edible Container Gardening for Families - Wednesday, June 24 at 1:30 p.m.

No, this is not a lesson on how to grow an edible container, but how to grow delicious, edible plants IN a container.  How about some delicious strawberries or yummy herbs in a pot?

Cinema Snark - Thursday, June 25 at 1:30 p.m.

Are you hilarious?  Do you provide movie commentary like nobody's business?  Well, this is the program for you!  TXT in YR jokes . . . and they'll appear on screen.  Then, brace yourself for LOLs.

Superheroes: A Never-ending Battle, Part 1 - Thursday, June 25 at 6 p.m.

Escape the Ordinary - Learn what it takes to be SUPER!   This PBS 3-part series examines the dawn of the comic book genre, its history and its influence on American culture, as well as the evolution of the characters.  In Part 1, we learn that during the Depression, the popularity of dozens of superhero characters opened the door for a new generation of artists and writers.  World War II created a patriotic fervor for star-spangled adventurers to represent the American spirit at war and on the home front, but in the 1950's, superheroes were caught in the fire of government scrutiny and regulation. 

Celebrate WALLDOGS in Delavan June 24-28

Carting K-9's - Friday, June 26 at 1:30 p.m.

The Carting K-9s are coming back!  Carting is a dog sport or activity in which a dog (usually a large breed, though any dog can do carting, regardless of breed or size) pulls a dogcart filled with supplies.  Sometimes, they even pull people!  And this event just happens to be one of those "sometimes."  Join APL and the Carting K-9s for a super fun event where these talented pups will give you a ride in their dogcart.  That's right, YOU!  How neat is that?!

Donuts and Doodles - Saturday, June 27 at 10 a.m.

The Walldogs are in Delavan . . . and we're ready to celebrate!  Let's draw with sidewalk chalk, eat donuts, and create artistic masterpieces!

Architectural Walking Tour - Monday, June 29 at 11 a.m.  Registration Required

Escape the Ordinary - Find the beauty in the buildings around us!  Local history expert Frank Landi leads us on a walking tour focusing on the architectural artwork of selected homes within a 3 block radius of the library.  The tour begins and ends at the library and will be outdoors; please dress for the weather.

Sleepytime Tales - Monday, June 29 at 6 p.m.

Nighttime is the right time for stories.  (OK, let's be honest, it's always the right time for stories.)  Join Ms. Katherine for a special monthly evening story time.  If it's nice enough, we'll be reading outside!  Stories and popcorn will be provided and pajamas/comfy clothes are encouraged.

Guilty Pleasures Book Club - Monday, June 29 at 6 p.m.

Escape the Ordinary - Put yourself in the shoes of an FBI agent!  Our guilty pleasure this month, The Maze by Catherine Coulter, follows FBI agent Lacey Sherlock whose life is forever changed when her beloved older sister's body is discovered in an abandoned warehouse -- the fourth victim of the String Killer, a serial killer who leads his victims into a maze with a ball of twine.  Lacey joins forces with Dillon Savich and his Criminal Apprehension Unit, but as the investigation progresses, questions arise as to the killer's true identity.  Contact the library if you'd like a copy of the book held for you.

Welty Environmental Center: We All Speak for the Trees - Tuesday, June 30 at 1 p.m.

Prepare yourself for a fun, educational introduction to ecology and how all life is connected!  The Lorax by Dr. Seuss will provide the inspiration and you'll see that, while people may do things that harm the Earth, they can be heroes, as well!  Demonstrations, interactive items, crafts, and stories will all be provided.  Be a hero for the Earth . . . every day!  All aspects of this program involve fun, hands-on learning.
