May 2015 Library Events


Summer Reading 2015:  Every Hero has a Story!Summer is almost upon us, and you know what that means:  Aram Public Library's Summer Reading Program!  Hurray!  More detailed information will be available soon, but to get you (even more) excited, here are this year's themes:

  • Toddler and Youth - Every Hero has a Story
  • Teen - Unmask!
  • Adult - Escape the Ordinary

1000 Books before Kindergarten

This program aims to ensure that all children entering kindergarten have acquired necessary learning and literacy skills through exposure to books and a language-rich early childhood experience.  This program is open-ended, so you can read at your own pace, year-round!  Stop by the Children's Desk for more information or to sign up!


LEGO Club - Monday May 4 and 18 at 4:30 p.m.

Give our LEGO blocks a workout building anything from a dinosaur to a spaceship.  Work in teams or individually, give your creation a name, then see it displayed in the Children's Library.

Story Time with Ms. Denise - Wednesdays at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Spring is springing up all over!  Why not celebrate with fantastic songs, stories, and activities?  Mornings are for babies and toddlers, afternoons are for all ages, and both sessions follow these fun themes:
  • May 6 - Mothers and Children
  • May 13 - In and Out

Tech Tutorials - Wednesdays from 9:30 to 11 a.m. - Registration Required

Baffled by technology?  Sign up for a 45-minute one-on-one session with a librarian for assistance with anything computer related, such as downloading e-books and audiobooks, filling out online applications, signing up or managing email, or learning to use Microsoft Office software.  Bring in your own device or use one of the library's computers.

Knit and Crochet Club - May 4, 11, 20 and 27 at 6 p.m.

For all ages and experience levels, Knit and Crochet Club meets at 6 p.m. on the scheduled dates.  Bring your own project to work on, share your expertise, and learn from others.

Tail Waggin' Tutors - Saturday, May 2 at 10 a.m.

Divot's out of town this month, but the lovely Nala will be back for more stories!  make an appointment to spend time reading with a trained therapy dog the first Saturday of each month.  Stop by the Children's Desk or call (262) 728-3111, ext. 117 to reserve your time slot!

Adult Craft Night: Paper Lotus Candlestick - Monday, May 4 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. - Registration Required

Celebrate spring with our version of the lotus blossom folding project.  Add a candle holder and a battery-operated candle to finish off the look.  All materials will be supplied and directions will be available for you to take home.  Be sure to check out the sample on display at the adult services desk.  Registration is required as space is limited.

Mother's Day Masterpiece - Tuesday, May 5 at 4 p.m.

Looking for the perfect gift for your mom for Mother's Day?  How about a personalized handmade work of art?  Homemade gifts are the best.  All materials will be provided.

Baby to Three, Come Wiggle with Me - Monday, May 11 at 10 a.m.

Words and wiggles go together like peanut butter and jelly in this special story time/dance party/open play extravaganza for babies and toddlers (and their grown-ups, of course).  We'll provide stories, songs, and things to explore . . . all we need is you!  Read, wiggle, repeat!  

Oh, My Aching Back - Monday, May 11 at 6 p.m.  Registration Required

Too much digging in the garden?  Strained your back lugging yard furniture out of the garage?  Learn about maintaining back health in this wellness presentation by physical therapist Meghan Bretl from Mercy Health.

Wiggly Worms - Tuesday, May 12 at 4:30 p.m.

Let's talk worms!  We need your help introducing our friendly little wigglers to their new home in the Kinder-Garden.  We'll learn about worms and what they do for the soil and plants, read a story, and learn how to make our very own worm farm at home!

Sparkle, Sparkle, Big Star Glitter Extravaganza - Thursday, May 14 at 6 p.m.

Glitter is a blast to craft with, but ends up EVERYWHERE!  Save yourself the hassle of cleaning and come by the library to make fun, sparkly works of art.

Library Board Meeting - Thursday, May 21 at 4:30 p.m.

Aram Book Club:  Shotgun Lovesongs by Nickolas Butler - Thursday, May 21 at 6:30 p.m.

Shotgun Lovesongs, the first novel by Wisconsin writer Nickolas Butler, has been called a love letter to the American heartland.  Told from alternating viewpoints, the book tells the story of a group of friends born and raised in the fictitious town of Little Wing, Wisconsin.  Hank became a farmer and stayed in Little Wing to raise a family with his wife Beth, Lee made it big as an indie rocker, Kip traded commodities in Chicago but has moved back, and Ronnie is a little slow, damaged by rodeo riding.  As their friendship weathers conflict, culture clash, and heartbreak the book becomes a celebration of the strong bonds of male friendship and a vanishing way of life.

Spring Celebration - Saturday, May 23 at 10 a.m.

Join Ms. Katherine and some friendly critters visiting from GEE Funny Farm, LLC for a fabulous spring celebration!  We'll learn about some amazing animals and even have the chance to pet and interact with them!  There will be a mini pig, a goose, a rabbit, a goat, and more!  You're not going to want to miss this!

Guilty Pleasures Book Club: The Unexpected Mrs. Pollifax by Dorothy Gilman - Monday, May 18 at 6 p.m.

Mrs. Virgil (Emily) Pollifax of New Brunswick, New Jersey, is a widow with grown children.  She is tired of attending her Garden Club meetings.  She wants to do something good for her country.  So, naturally, she becomes a CIA agent and finds that a quick trip to Mexico City is on her agenda.  Unfortunately, something goes wrong, and our dear Mrs. Pollifax finds herself embroiled in quite a hot Cold War -- and her country's enemies find themselves entangled with one unbelievable feisty lady.

Margaret Wise Brown Stuffed Animal Story Time - Tuesday, May 26 at 6 p.m.

Put on your pajamas, grab your favorite stuffed friend, and come on down to the library for a very special nighttime story time celebrating Margaret Wise Brown.  (She's the author of Goodnight Moon!)  We'll read stories, have a snack, and then your stuffed animals are welcome to join us for a sleepover at the library!  When you come pick them up the next day, there might even be some surprises waiting for you . . .

Memorial Day Holiday Hours:  

Closed Sunday, May 24 and Monday, May 25.  Remember, the library is NOT open Sundays between Memorial Day and Labor Weekends.
