New Movies Just In!


It's Kind of a Funny Story  (PG-13)
Sometimes what's in your head isn't as crazy as you think...that's certainly true for Craig, a stressed-out teenager who checks himself into a mental health clinic for some time out. What he finds instead is an unlikely mentor, a potential new romance and an opportunity to begin anew. Charming, witty and smart, it's a coming-of-age story that's kind of a funny story.



Voyage of the Dawn Treader  (PG)
When Lucy and Edmund Pensive, along with their cousin Eustace, are swallowed into a painting and transported back to Narnia, they join King Caspian and a noble mouse named Reepicheep aboard the magnificent ship The Dawn Treader. The courageous voyagers travel to mysterious islands, confront mystical creatures, and reunite with the Great Lion Aslan and a mission that will determine the fate ofNarnia itself!

Yogi Bear  (PG)
Everyone's favorite pic-a-nic basket-stealing bear brings his meal-mooching ways to movies in this live-action/CG-animated adventure. Jellystone has been losing business, so conniving Mayor Brown has decided to shut it down and sell the land. Faced with the loss of his home, Yogi must prove he really is 'smarter than the average bear' as he and Boo Boo join forces with Ranger Smith to find a way to save the park from closing forever.

May 2011 Library Events

REGULAR ACTIVITIES:

Books and Bagels – Saturday, May 7 at 10 a.m.
This informal drop-in program gives you a chance to share a light breakfast and talk about what you’re reading with other book lovers. We’ll present some book talks on a mixed bag of titles, plus have some information for you about what’s happening this summer. Bakery, water and juice are provided. Coffee, tea and hot chocolate are available for $.75 from the Friends Kiosk at the adult service desk.

LEGO Club – 1ST and 3RD Mondays at 4 p.m. (May 2 and 16)
Attention LEGO Lovers: Come to the library with your friends on the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month. At each meeting, we’ll give you a theme to build from, time to build individually or together, and a chance to share and display creations. Final projects will be displayed in the Youth Services Department.

Film – Tuesday, May 3 from 6:30 to 8:15 p.m.
Rabbit Hole starring Nicole Kidman and Aaron Eckman (PG-13, 92 min.)
Synopsis: Becca and Howie Corbett are returning to their everyday existence in the wake of a shocking, sudden loss. Just eight months ago, they were a happy suburban family with everything they wanted. Now, they are caught in a maze of memory, longing, guilt, recrimination, sarcasm and tightly controlled rage from which they cannot escape. All You Can Read Buffet – Thursdays, May 5 and 19 at 3:30 p.m.
The All You Can Read Buffet is a book club by teens for teens. May 5 we’ll meet at Starbucks to talk about The Boy Who Dared by Susan Bartoletti. This book is the story of seventeen-year-old Helmuth Hübener, who was imprisoned for distributing anti-Nazi leaflets in October, 1942. It tells about his life and how he came to dedicate himself to bring the truth about Hitler and the war to the German people. Then, on May 19, head for McDonalds to share your thoughts on Paranormalcy by Kiersten White. Here’s the synopsis: Evie’s always thought of herself as a normal teenager, even though she works for the International Paranormal Containment Agency, her ex-boyfriend is a faerie, she’s falling for a shape-shifter, and she’s the only person who can see through paranormals’ glamours. Book Discussion - Thursday, May 19 at 7 p.m.
Mountains Beyond Mountains by Tracey Kidder
Dr. Paul Farmer was brought up in a bus and on a boat. In medical school he found his life’s calling: to diagnose and cure infectious diseases and to bring the lifesaving tools of modern medicine to those who need them most. This book shows how radical change can be fostered in situations that seem insurmountable, and it also shows how a meaningful life can be created, as Farmer blasts through convention to get results. Books and discussion guides are available at the library. Anyone who has read the book is welcome to attend.

English Conversation Group – Wednesdays at 1 p.m.
For students learning English as a second language, this is a chance for you to practice everyday conversation skills.

Tiny Tots Time – Tuesday, May 3 at 10 a.m.
This will be the last Tiny Tots session until fall. Summer story time is held on Fridays at 10 a.m. beginning June 17.

Preschool Story Time – Friday, May 6 at 10 a.m.
May 6 will be the final session of preschool story time this spring. Summer story time begins on Friday, June 17 at 10 a.m.

SPECIAL EVENTS AT APL THIS MONTH:

Flowers for Mom – Friday, May 6 at 4 p.m.
Give Mom something special and hand-made for Mother’s Day. Create a custom-decorated flower pot, then plant seeds that will grow into a beautiful bouquet for Mom. All supplies provided. Children under 12 must be accompanied by a caregiver.

Sock Art – Monday, May 9 at 4 p.m.
Celebrate Lost Sock Memorial Day by cheering up your orphan socks. Has your sock always wanted a face? Dreamed of being a star? Make a puppet! If your sock is an exhibitionist or likes being the center of attention, add some cut-outs, jewels and studs. Create a beautiful spring-like sock wreath or a sock sculpture. Please bring a sock or two. Everything else will be provided. This is an all-age program, but young children should be accompanied by a caregiver.

COMING IN JUNE:

What’s on Your Plate! – Tuesday, June 7 at 4 p.m.
Do you know what kinds of food and how much you should be eating? Learn how to build a nutritious and delicious plate in this workshop featuring the “New American Plate” meal plan. Presented by our UW Extension Family Living Coordinator Jenny Wehmeier, this presentation includes recipes and samples. Space is limited; please pre-register.

Summer Library Program Kick-off Event: LaBak the Magician – Saturday, June 11 at 9:45 a.m.
Sign up begins June 11 for an exciting summer of fun and adventure! In addition to our usual Tuesday entertainers and family programs, we have special adult events, preschool story time, and activities for kids age 9-12 and teens age 13-18. There’s also a monthly Spanish story time. And the reading portion of the program is open to people of all ages!
