Summer Library Program Begins June 11

In addition to our usual Tuesday entertainers and family programs, we have special adult events, preschool story time, and activities for kids age 9-12 and teens age 13-18.  The reading portion of the program is open to people of all ages (including adults) and offers incentives to read,to  visit the library, and to be active during the summer.  Sign up at the library beginning June 11.

About Children in the Library

The library welcomes children to use its facilities and services. However, unexpected events can occur while children are left unattended.  The library’s Child Safety Policy requires that:

• Children age 8 and younger must stay with their caregivers.
• Caregivers must be at least 12 years of age.
• Children age 9-12 may use the library unattended as long as they behave properly.
• Parents or caregivers are responsible for the actions of their children.
• Children who do not meet these guidelines will be turned over to their caregivers or the Delavan Police Department.

FOR CHILDREN and FAMILIES 

Storytime with Miss Kris – Wednesdays at 10 a.m. 

Storytime with Miss Kris is an awesome opportunity for children and caregivers to spend quality time together.  Each session includes stories, games, music and movement, plus early literacy and social skill building activities.  Summer storytime runs from June 13 to August 1 for kids up to age 6.  

Tote-ally Cool Book Bags –June 12-14 @ 3 p.m.

Stop in at the library on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday and  prepare for summer reading in style by decorating your very own book bag!  While you're here, feel free to beat the rush and register for Dream Big--READ!  All materials will be provided.  Just bring your creativity!

Celebration of Freedom Bicycle Decorating & Parade - Friday, June 15 @ 1 p.m.
In celebration of the American Veteran's Traveling Tribute called "The Cost of Freedom," come to the library to decorate your bike in red, white, and blue.  Then join the parade to Phoenix Park beginning at 3 p.m. All materials will be provided.

Scott Obermann, Magician - Tuesday, June 19 @ 1:30 p.m.
Come one, come all!  Witness astonishing feats by the amazing magician, Scott Obermann!  Storywagon is sponsored by the Lakeshores Library System.

How Do They Do That?  Magic Trick Workshop - Wednesday, June 20 @ 1 p.m.
Amaze your friends and family with astonishing feats of magic and mystery.  Learn tricks of the magician trade faster than you can say "abracadabra."

Movie: Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole (PG)

Wednesday, June 27 @ 1 p.m.
When a young owl is abducted by an evil owl army, he must escape with newfound friends to seek out the legendary Guardians to stop the menace.  Snacks will be provided.  Sign up by phone (728-3111, ext. 117) or at the library beginning June 26 at 9 a.m.

FOR TEENS (age 13+)

Movie: The Prestige (PG-13) - June 21 @ 3 p.m.
The rivalry between two magicians is exacerbated when one of them performs the ultimate illusion.  Snacks will be provided.  Ages 13 and up.

Teen Book Club - Thursday, June 28 @ 3 p.m.
Reading something really fantastic?  Looking for ideas on what to read next?  Share your favorites and find new ones while enjoying tasty treats.

FOR ADULTS

Night Images Photography Class – Wednesday, June 6 at 6 p.m.

John Finley shares some of his night photos and explains the techniques used for each image.  Local photographers are invited to display their night images of Delavan at the library this summer as part of the summer library program. 

Couponing Class – Monday, June 11 at 10 a.m.

This two-hour session gives you all the information you need to start saving money.  Topics include everything from finding and organizing coupons to managing your pantry and freezer. Registration is not required.

Floral Arranging – Tuesday, June 12 at 1:30 p.m.

Sponsored by the Friends of APL, this workshop is presented by an expert from Treasure Hut, whose experience in floral arranging will help you make the most of the beautiful blooms in your summer garden or other source of fresh-cut flowers. 

Downloading from OverDrive – Wednesday, June 13 at 6 p.m.

Do you own a Kindle, Nook, iPad, or other device capable of reading ebooks?  This class will show you how to borrow ebooks FREE from the library by using OverDrive, including an overview of the digital library website and demonstration of several different ereading devices.  PLEASE REGISTER.

Delavan's Historic Architectural Ornamentation

Saturday, June 16 at 10 a.m.

Architectural historian Frank Landi examines the buildings in the business district of downtown Delavan, documenting the architectural artwork and the changes that have occurred over the past 100 years. 

Movie: A Midsummer Night’s Dream (PG-13) – Monday, June 18 at 12 p.m.

When two pairs of star-crossed lovers, a feuding pair of supernatural sprites, and a love potion gone awry all come together in an enchanted moonlit forest, the result is a delightful mix of merriment and magic. Bring your lunch. Dessert and beverage will be provided.

Book Club: The Book of Lost Things by John Connolly

Wednesday, June 20 at 7 p.m.

High in his attic bedroom, twelve-year-old David mourns the death of his mother, angry and alone, with only the books on his shelf for company. But those books have begun to whisper to him in the darkness, and as he takes refuge in his imagination, he finds that reality and fantasy have begun to meld. Anyone who has read the book is welcome to attend.

DIY Project:  Handmade Books – Monday, June 25 at 6 p.m.

What’s between the covers?  An accordion book, of course! Have you ever thought about making your own book?  Then you might want to start with one of these.  In an accordion book, a series of folded pages will hold or display your treasures.  Each page can be left plain for journaling or can be decorated with stickers, stamping, labels, or your own artwork.  This style of accordion book has cloth covers, decorative end pages on the inside, up to six pockets or pages, and a ribbon closure. Check the display in the library near the adult circulation desk.  All materials will be provided.  PLEASE REGISTER.
