SPECIAL EVENTS AT APL THIS MONTH:

Guerilla Poetry for Teens and Tweens

All during the month of April, kids age 12 and up will have a chance to create poetry using magnets or book spines at the library. Every time you come into the library you can “write” something new. We’ll be taking pictures and posting your creations on the wall in our teen section.

The Big Read Kickoff: “No Foolin’ – Free Stuff” – April 1
This giveaway from the Big Read includes two drawings. Enter to win a copy of the book Great Tales and Poems of Edgar Allan Poe or tickets for Joshua Kane’s performance of “Edgar Allan Poe’s Tales of Terror” at Young Auditorium on April 6. Enter beginning March 21. Drawings will be held the evening of April 1 and winners will be notified by phone or email the following day.

Spring Fling Sock Hop – Friday, April 1 from 6 to 8 p.m.
The whole family is invited to twist and shout at the library after hours! Take off your shoes and let your socks lead the way, move to the music as we play all your favorites. Do the Chicken Dance, the Bunny Hop, Walk Like an Egyptian, and more. Parents and grandparents, spend an evening moving and grooving (and laughing) with the children in your life at the Library Sock Hop!

Stuffed Animal Story Time and Sleepover – Wednesday, April 6 at 4 p.m.
Would you like to know what your stuffed animals do when they’re away from you? Here’s a chance to find out. Bring your favorite stuffed animal to the library for a bedtime story and snack, then tuck your friend into bed in the children’s library. While you sleep at home, our secret cameras will take pictures of your stuffed animal’s exciting library adventure. Pick up your buddy in the morning and see what mischief a library full of animals can get into!

Scrabble Night – Wednesday, April 13 from 6 to 8 p.m.
Attention Scrabble lovers: get your tiles ready! Our drop-in Scrabble night is a perfect activity for all ages. We’ll have four versions of this popular word game available – Scrabble Flash, Scrabble Slam card game, classic Scrabble, and Scrabble Junior.

Eggtastic Art – Tuesday, April 19 at 4 p.m.
Decorating Easter eggs is a favorite activity for all ages, but keeping your masterpiece is another story. Our Eggtastic Art program allows you to create a permanent spring decoration that can be used over and over. Decorate a plastic egg using the materials we provide, fill your egg with confetti to make a cascarone, then crack it over a special someone to shower them with good luck.

Safety Storytime – Monday, April 25 from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m.
Learn about the jobs of the Police Officer, Firefighter and EMT in this special story time, featuring up-close looks at their vehicles.

Simple Steps to a Clutter-free Garage & Basement - Thursday, April 28 from 6 to 8 p.m.
Please pre-register.
No, it’s not a fantasy! Discover how to take control of all the stuff that’s hogging your garage and clogging your basement and attic. It’s not just about organizing, it’s about being empowered to make the decisions to rid yourself of the belongings you no longer use or need. You’ll learn a step-by-step process to attack your clutter and conquer it once and for all. Know what you have and be able to find it. Turn your garage and basement into useful, functional storage. Join us for this entertaining and motivating program by Kathi Miller, Clutter Coach.

Bloodsuckers Book Discussion for Teens – Friday, April 29 at 2 p.m.
Are vampires, zombies and werewolves your thing? Do you have “special talents”? Get together with other monster-loving teens to talk about your favorite paranormal books. Skype with author, mad scientist, and monster prom chaperone Carrie Harris. Her new zombie book, Bad Taste in Boys, is coming out in July 2011. And that’s not all! We’ll also be giving away some awesome books.

The library will be closed April 22.

REGULAR ACTIVITIES AT APL:

Books and Bagels – Saturday, April 2 at 10 a.m.
This informal drop-in program gives you a chance to share a light breakfast and talk about what you’re reading with other book lovers. Hosted by a different library staff member each month, Books and Bagels exposes you to a lot of different titles and authors and gives you a chance to chat with your favorite librarians. Bakery, water and juice are provided. Coffee, tea and hot chocolate are available for $.75 from the Friends Kiosk at the adult service desk.

LEGO Club – 1ST and 3RD Mondays at 4 p.m. (April 4 and 18)
Attention LEGO Lovers: Come to the library with your friends on the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month. At each meeting, we’ll give you a theme to build from, time to build individually or together, and a chance to share and display creations. Final projects will be displayed in the Youth Services Department.

Film – Tuesday, April 5 from 6:30 to 8:15 p.m.
The Tourist starring Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie (PG-13, 103 min.)
Synopsis: During an impromptu trip to Europe to mend a broken heart, Frank unexpectedly finds himself in a flirtatious encounter with Elise, an extraordinary woman who deliberately crosses his path. Against the breathtaking backdrop of Paris and Venice, their whirlwind romance quickly evolves as they find themselves unwittingly thrust into a deadly game of cat and mouse. Popcorn and soda will be provided.

All You Can Read Buffet – Thursdays, April 7 and 21 at 3:30 p.m.
The All You Can Read Buffet is a book club by teens for teens. The April 7 meeting will be held at Starbucks, where we’ll sip some java and talk about Sorta Like a Rock Star by Matthew Quick. This book tells the story of seventeen-year-old Amber Appleton who is homeless, living in a school bus with her unfit mother. On April 21 we’ll meet at the Library for some fun activities and to discuss Please Ignore Vera Dietz by A. S. King. In this book, high school senior Vera Dietz struggles with secrets that could clear the name of her best friend, who died under mysterious circumstances. Library Board meetings are open to the public.

Book Discussion - Thursday, April 21 at 7 p.m.
The Big Read: Great Tales and Poems of Edgar Allan Poe
This is a collection of Poe’s classic works, including The Tell Tale Heart, The Cask of Amontillado, The Masque of the Red Death, The Fall of the House of Usher, The Raven, Lenore, Annabel Lee, and many more. The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Arts Midwest. English Conversation Group – Wednesdays at 1 p.m.
For students learning English as a second language, this is a chance for you to practice everyday conversation skills.

Tiny Tots Time – Tuesdays at 10 a.m.
Babies in the library – that’s what Tiny Tots is all about! Tiny Tots Time, designed for children ages 0-2, is a program that brings caregivers and babies together for an hour of stimulating experiences intended to nurture the bond between caregiver and child. The program includes nursery rhymes and songs, book sharing, parenting information, and free play.

Preschool Story Time – Fridays at 10 a.m.
Help your preschooler get ready to read. Share books, stories, rhymes, music, and movement with your children and build language skills. Preschool children and their parents or caregivers are invited to join us for story time on Fridays at 10 a.m. Activities are age-appropriate for children from age 3 through Kindergarten, and each program includes a variety of activities. The program is free and registration is not required, but caregivers are expected to stay with children.
